The members of Hillyer take seriously Jesus’ command to serve those in need. Some of this service is lived out in our individual lives as we serve on boards and volunteer for local ministries like the Green Chair Program and Red Cross. But there are some opportunities that bring us together, working as a church community. Some of the projects that have become passionate to us are:

Appalachian Service Project

ASP involves mission trips to the mountains where team members repair roofs, rebuild porches, lay brick, or complete any of an array of work projects. This past spring, young adults from Hillyer spent a week in Virginia, giving local residents a helping hand.

Rise Against Hunger

On a Sunday afternoon in October, the Hillyer Fellowship Hall becomes a madhouse as we fill hundreds of bags with rice and beans which are then distributed to people through global partners which administers feeding programs through schools, orphanages, health clinics and vocational training sites.

CROP Walk

On the last Sunday of October when thousands of people are walking across Raleigh to raise funds for Church World Service hunger ministries, Hillyer members are walking with them.

Angel Tree Ministries

We take the names of children of incarcerated folk and try to make their Christmas a little brighter than it might otherwise be by buying some gifts that are on their holiday wish lists.

Global South Mission Team

Hillyer teams have been going south of the board for some years to help build homes, assist in nutrition programs, install water filtration systems in several communities. The last couple of trips have been to Mexico working with Faith Ministries out of McAllen, Texas. In the past 30 years, Faith Ministries staff and volunteers have built more than 2,000 houses. For families in need.

Serving Through Our Denomination

Disciples Mission Fund

This core fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) funds every piece of our common ministry in the United States and Canada: colleges and seminaries, church building loans, our ministerial pension board, publishing resources, and more. It is the root system on which all our ministries flower and bear fruit.

Week of Compassion
Special Offering

One time each year we take an offering for the Week of Compassion (One Great Hour of Sharing), but the miracle is that it gives us a presence during the entire 52 weeks to come. When hurricanes, droughts or other natural disaster take place, or when refugee crises occur, we are there already.

Camp Caroline

The camp that is such an influence for our youth and children is in the sandhills of the eastern coast and Hillyer provides strong support for the camp and campers. A particular piece of this support for our campgrounds is through our maintenance of the Latham Cabin which HMCC has adopted. In 2023, we provided funds to replace the HVAC system.

These are simply glimpses of the myriad of ways that Hillyer members live out our faith by serving others. We provide building space for AA and NA meetings as well as extra space for the Ark of Wake County, an organization which serves people with developmental challenges. We are able to provide some assistance with utility bills for people in the community.

We cannot tell this story completely, because it is forever growing and changing – but we invite you to join us in serving others.
